Fire Engulfs Two Train Coaches in Andhra Pradesh, Leaving One Passenger Dead

A tragic fire accident aboard a passenger train in Andhra Pradesh claimed the life of one person and caused panic among 158 passengers on board after two coaches were engulfed in flames, railway officials confirmed. The incident occurred while the train was passing through a remote stretch, prompting an emergency response from railway staff, local authorities, and fire services.

According to preliminary information, the fire broke out in one of the coaches and rapidly spread to an adjacent coach, forcing passengers to evacuate in haste. Thick smoke filled the compartments, making it difficult for several passengers to exit quickly. While most travelers managed to escape safely, one passenger reportedly succumbed to injuries sustained during the incident.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as passengers pulled emergency chains and attempted to alert railway staff. “We suddenly smelled smoke, and within minutes flames were visible,” said a passenger who escaped unhurt. “People started shouting and rushing toward the exits. Some jumped out with their luggage, while others helped elderly passengers and children.”

Railway authorities stated that the train was immediately brought to a halt once the fire was detected. Emergency protocols were activated, and onboard staff assisted passengers in evacuating the affected coaches. Fire tenders from nearby towns were rushed to the site and managed to douse the flames after sustained efforts.

Officials confirmed that 158 passengers were traveling in the two affected coaches at the time of the fire. While many sustained minor injuries such as burns, smoke inhalation, and bruises, most were treated at the site or taken to nearby hospitals as a precautionary measure. The injured are reported to be in stable condition.

The deceased passenger’s identity has not been officially disclosed, pending notification of family members. Authorities have expressed condolences and assured that compensation will be provided in accordance with railway safety norms. Senior railway officials visited the site to assess the damage and oversee rescue and relief operations.

Initial investigations suggest that the fire may have been caused by an electrical short circuit, though officials emphasized that the exact cause will be determined only after a detailed inquiry. A technical team has been constituted to inspect the burnt coaches, electrical systems, and safety equipment. The inquiry will also examine whether there were any lapses in maintenance or safety compliance.

The incident disrupted rail traffic along the route for several hours, as the damaged coaches had to be detached and the track cleared. Several trains were delayed or diverted, causing inconvenience to passengers. Railway authorities later arranged alternative transport and accommodation for stranded travelers.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and senior state officials expressed grief over the loss of life and directed district authorities to ensure proper medical care for the injured. Messages of concern and condolences were also issued by railway unions and public representatives.

Passenger safety has once again come under scrutiny following the incident. Experts have stressed the importance of regular maintenance, timely replacement of aging coaches, and enhanced fire detection systems. While Indian Railways has introduced several safety measures in recent years, including fire-retardant materials and smoke detectors, incidents such as this highlight the need for continuous monitoring and upgrades.

Railway officials reiterated that passenger safety remains a top priority and urged travelers to follow safety instructions, avoid carrying flammable materials, and report any unusual smells or smoke immediately. The final inquiry report is expected to provide clarity on the cause of the fire and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
